Hogan for Maryland Releases Back to School Video

Hogan for Maryland today released a back to school message from Governor Hogan reaffirming his commitment to work to ensure every child has access to a world-class education regardless of what zip code they happen to grow up in.

“In the Senate, I will fight for greater funding with real accountability to attain results and to provide choice,” Governor Hogan says in the video. “I’ll work across the aisle to advance innovative ideas that create new pathways for success for every child, including tax credits, educational scholarship accounts, charter schools, and more flexibility for 529 educational savings accounts that empower kids and their parents with the tools to shape their own destiny.”

Yesterday, Governor Hogan visited Paint Branch Elementary School in Prince George’s County, where he spoke with students and answered their questions. The campaign also collected and distributed backpacks, notebooks, and classroom supplies in celebration of the new school year.

In May, on a visit to Archbishop Borders School in Highlandtown, Governor Hogan released the education priorities he’ll focus on as a United States Senator, which include:

  • Advocating for greater funding with real accountability, results, and choice.
  • Working across the aisle to advance innovative ideas that create new pathways for success for every child.
  • Expanding flexibility for 529 accounts.
  • Fighting for tax credits, educational scholarship accounts, and charter schools to further empower parents and students.

This week as Maryland students begin to go back to school, I want to reaffirm my commitment to ensure that every child across our country has access to a world-class education regardless of what zip code they happen to grow up in.

For eight years, we worked every single day to advance that goal. We provided Maryland Public Schools record funding every single year. We advanced programs like P-TECH that provide opportunities to allow high school students to earn an associate’s degree simultaneous with their high school diploma, while also getting valuable career training and experience. We expanded access to charter schools and created the BOOST Scholarship Program so that deserving children could attend a non-public school of their choice.

In the Senate, I will fight for greater funding with real accountability to attain results and to provide choice. I’ll work across the aisle to advance innovative ideas that create new pathways for success for every child, including tax credits, educational scholarship accounts, charter schools, and more flexibility for 529 educational savings accounts that empower kids and their parents with the tools to shape their own destiny.

My opponent has a very different approach. She opposes education savings accounts and scholarships for underserved students. When her school board appointees were charged with misconduct and willful neglect of duty, she said it was “not her responsibility.”

We must all take responsibility for our children to ensure that our schools are the best in the world. We need to embrace innovative ideas for the 21st century instead of continuing to be weighed down by old partisan divisions.

That’s exactly what I did for eight years as your governor and that’s exactly what I’ll do in the United States Senate.
