Governor Larry Hogan today released the following statement:
“When Jewish students are told to go home out of fear of violence, there are not fine people on both sides. Acts of violence and harassment against Jews or any group is never legitimate or peaceful protest. No student should feel threatened or at risk on their own campus.
“Leaders across the political spectrum must unequivocally and unapologetically denounce these antisemitic acts. Columbia’s leadership must immediately take action to restore order for their Jewish students. This cannot be tolerated or excused in the United States of America.
“Last fall, I withdrew from my fellowships at Harvard because I felt no one could afford to remain silent in the face of dangerous antisemitism on campuses. Since then, this crisis has only grown worse and more urgent. At least 1,000 antisemitic incidents have been reported on American college campuses since October 7th.
“On the first night of Passover, we are reminded that there are no permanent victories over persecution, discrimination, and hate. Amid these painful events, I want to assure Maryland’s Jewish community that I will always stand with you to ensure your safety and freedom to worship.”
