Governor Hogan Discusses Border Crisis, Independent Leadership, and Courage in Politics

MSNBC’s 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle

On independent leadership: “I will stand up to the current President, to the former President, to the Republican Party or the Democratic Party and I am going to tell people exactly what I think. … Most people are too concerned about their next reelection, and making everybody happy. Whereas I just try to give people exactly what I think the right answer is.”

On Montgomery County’s release of a suspect in the murder of a two-year old in Langley Park: “It was a terrible, tragic situation that should have never happened. And I was outraged, but unfortunately it is happening far too often. … This was a violent criminal who they had already let out of Montgomery County twice before. He should have been deported and instead he was walking the streets… This is why we have to address this crisis at the border, this is why we have to push back against these folks that say we can’t enforce federal law.… This is something we need to address across the country. I think we have to secure the border, and find a fix to the broken immigration system.”

MSNBC Live with Luke Russert

On the border crisis: “It sounds complicated because both sides demonize the other side and they won’t talk about real solutions. We have to secure the border and we have got to work on immigration reform that is meaningful and real and you can’t have those discussions without first stopping the crisis that is at our Southern Border.”

On courage in politics: “I think [courage] is what’s missing in politics today. People who were willing to put country above party, the people who were willing to stand up and do the right thing. … We need people who don’t care about their next reelection, and aren’t just down to do whatever the party tells them to do.
