“It’s a terribly crazy time in politics these days, and I’m concerned about the divisive rhetoric on both sides. I’m concerned about the angry toxic politics, and that’s really one of the reasons I decided to step up and run because I think the kind of leadership that we need is sorely lacking in Washington.”

“The number one issue is the economy. It was already a soft spot. It was, as I go out there talking to folks, that’s the main thing they’re concerned about, affordability and inflation, the cost of groceries, the cost of housing. And the market, you know, the dramatic drop in the market certainly isn’t going to help. There’s people are very concerned out there at every level, hardworking folks that are concerned about the economy.

…I took the 49th out of 50 states’ economies and turned it into number six, the biggest economic turnaround in America. And I got a Democratic legislature to cut taxes eight years in a row by $4.7 billion and took the largest deficit in history and turned it into the largest surplus. The people in Washington haven’t balanced the budget in forever—we had to do it every year.

The people know me in the state and they trust that I’m gonna stand up and do the right thing for Maryland. I’m a bipartisan guy that’s willing to reach across the aisle and try to work toward bipartisan common sense solutions.”

“My opponent would like it to be just about red and blue, just R and D, take the names off and the records in the issue positions. We’re gonna just talk about the issues that matter and show the contrast.”

“I’m going to be a maverick. … I’m gonna be a guy down there in the middle of everything. I’m gonna make sure Maryland has a seat at the table, that I’m a critical swing vote to see if we can make some things happen down there because almost nothing ever happens in Washington and I’m going to reach across the aisle. If I disagree, I’m gonna stand up and say so and if I agree that I’m gonna try to work together with anyone to get it done.”

Punchbowl News

Also on Thursday, Governor Hogan spoke to Punchbowl News during a stop in Prince George’s County:

Interestingly, Hogan recently cut an ad spotlighting the late former Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who infamously drew Trump’s ire for sinking legislation to repeal Obamacare. In our interview, Hogan said he views himself in the mold of McCain or the now-Independent Sen. Joe Machin (W.Va.), who had massive sway over the Democratic agenda. “I really do see that kind of a role,” Hogan told us. “I can be a key vote and a key voice for trying to actually put things together and get things done.”
