As the U.S. Senate prepares to consider a tranche of foreign aid bills, Governor Larry Hogan called on lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to pass the legislation and support America’s allies:
“The entire world is watching this Senate vote as a test of American resolve. Congress must send a strong and unified message that will help secure peace through strength.
“American strength and support of our allies keeps our nation safe and prosperous and keeps our beacon of freedom shining bright around the world. The toxic dysfunction and political gamesmanship in Washington that has delayed this critical package for months has done exactly the opposite, projecting weakness on the world stage and inviting aggression from our adversaries. If our friends don’t trust that we will support them and our enemies no longer fear us, it puts us in a very dangerous position.
“This isn’t about right or left—it’s about right or wrong. This bipartisan compromise is another example of how the most pressing challenges we face can’t be solved by one party alone. We can no longer afford to allow our government to be held hostage by political arsonists and the typical partisan politicians who enable them. It’s exactly why I’m running for Senate–because the only way to fix the divisiveness and dysfunction is to step up and be part of the solution. I urge the Senate, for our country’s sake, to pass this bill with a strong, bipartisan vote of support.”
