Hogan for Maryland today released a new digital ad commemorating the anniversary of Sen. John McCain’s historic vote to end Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare, and the importance of independent leadership that puts country over party.

In the summer of 2017, Governor Hogan and a bipartisan group of governors urged Congress to “immediately reject” efforts to repeal Obamacare and instead focus on fixing unstable insurance markets. After Sen. McCain’s vote, Governor Hogan opposed efforts to revive the bill, saying it “is not a solution that works for Maryland.” The following year, he enacted historic bipartisan legislation to stabilize the health insurance market in Maryland and cut premiums by 30%.
Text: “Country Over Party”
Seven years ago, John McCain put people over politics.
He gave the big thumbs down and protected health care for millions.
And Governor Hogan stood with him.
Following that courageous stand, John McCain appealed to his colleagues and the nation:
“I hope we can again rely on humility, on our need to cooperate, on our dependence on each other to learn how to trust each other again and by so doing better serve the people who elected us. Stop listening to the bombastic loudmouths on the radio and television and the Internet. To hell with them. They don’t want anything done for the public good.
“We’re getting nothing done, my friends. We’re getting nothing done.
“The success of the Senate is important to the continued success of America. This country – this big, boisterous, brawling, intemperate, restless, striving, daring, beautiful, bountiful, brave, good and magnificent country – needs us to help it thrive. That responsibility is more important than any of our personal interests or political affiliations.”
Let’s finally listen to Senator McCain.
