Just hours after a shooting at a youth football game in Prince George’s county killed a man and wounded a 5-year-old child caught in the crossfire, County Executive Angela Alsobrooks continued to gaslight voters about the skyrocketing crime rate in her jurisdiction.
When asked on MSNBC if crime was up in Prince George’s county, Alsobrooks responded, “Well, no.”
While crime is declining nationally, under her leadership as county executive, murders have nearly doubled, violent crime has increased over 30%, and carjackings have increased well over 500%.
The victims and families whose lives have been destroyed by skyrocketing murders, violent crime, and carjackings deserve action and solutions, not to be dismissed away by Angela Alsobrooks in her pursuit of higher office. Marylanders deserve a leader who will level with them about the problems they face, but Angela Alsobrooks continues to prove she is just another politician who refuses to take accountability for her failures.

During The Height Of The Defund The Police Movement, County Executive Alsobrooks Stripped $20 Million Set Aside For A New Police Training Facility And Redirected It Towards A Public Health Center. “Prince George’s County officials plan to forgo expanding a police training facility and will instead fund a $20 million public health facility, County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks said Tuesday. Alsobrooks said the new facility will treat mental health and addiction. The health facility would be built using money originally in the county police department’s budget for a new public safety training facility.” … “The new facility is part of Alsobrooks’s vow to dedicate resources to mental health. Last year, she redirected $20 million to build a behavioral health center in Lanham with funds originally intended for a new police training facility. That decision was part of the county’s response to the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody in May 2020 and came during nationwide calls for racial and social justice.” (Bennett Leckrone, “Alsobrooks Seeks New Heath Center Instead Of Expanded Police Training Facility,” Alsobrooks Seeks New Health Center Instead of Expanded Police Training Facility – Maryland Matters, 6/16/20; Karina Elwood, “Prince George’s Welcomes New Hospital Facility In Mental Health Desert,” The Washington Post, 5/11/22)
- As County Executive Alsobrooks Shifted Funds For Police Training, The Prince George’s County Police Department Remains Understaffed By Nearly 300 Officers. “The police and firefighter staff shortage in Prince George’s County has gotten so bad that the police department is now traveling more than 1,500 miles to San Juan, Puerto Rico, in search of officers… Currently, the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) is down more than 300 police officers, and the fire department is looking to hire at least another 100 firefighters.” (John Gonzalez, “Prince George’s County Looks To Tax Incentives To Combat Police And Firefighter Shortage,” WJLA, 9/29/23)
